,Palo azul, or kidney wood, is a traditional herbal remedy known for its unique fluorescent blue-amber color and potential benefits for kidney and urinary health.
Health Benefits of Palo Azul
Kidney Health: Contains antioxidants and flavonoids that may help prevent kidney stones by fighting cell-damaging molecules and supporting urinary flow through mild diuretic effects.
Anti-inflammatory Properties: Traditional use and preliminary studies suggest it may help ease joint discomfort and inflammation associated with conditions like arthritis.
Digestive Support: Rich in compounds like D-pinitol, which can help soothe mild digestive discomfort.
Caffeine-Free Hydration: Naturally free of caffeine, sugar, and calories, making it a soothing alternative to standard teas.
How to Prepare Palo Azul Tea (Decoction)
The traditional method uses woody bark or chips, which release fluorescent polyphenols when simmered.
Rinse: Quickly rinse 1 to 2 tablespoons (or about 1 ounce) of palo azul wood chips or bark under cool water.Combine: Place the chips into a pot with 4 to 6 cups (up to a gallon for larger batches) of spring water or distilled water, which helps enhance the blue luminescence.
Simmer: Bring the water to a boil, then cover, lower the heat, and let it simmer anywhere from 30 minutes to 1 hour. The longer it cooks, the deeper amber-brown the liquid becomes and the more intense the blue fluorescence looks under direct light.Strain:
Remove from heat, strain out the wood chips, and let it cool slightly.Serve: Enjoy it warm or chilled over ice. You can add a squeeze of lemon or a touch of honey for flavor.
(Note: The same wood chips can often be reused for a lighter second batch).
How do I prepare the palo alzu 🤔 (my way)
I basically added 4 palo azul wood chips and 1 tbsp of stinging nettle to my 64 ounce jar along with heated spring water and placed in the refrigerator for a 24 hours.
