Bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) is primarily valued for its high concentration of anthocyanins, potent antioxidants that may protect eye tissues from oxidative stress and promoting healthy aging process and reduce inflammation.

Reduced Eye Fatigue: Supplementing with bilberry extract (typically 240–480 mg daily) has been shown to reduce eye strain, soreness, and blurred vision, particularly for individuals with prolonged exposure to digital screens.

Dry Eye Relief: Clinical studies suggest that bilberry extract can improve tear production and stability. In one pilot study, a combination of bilberry and fish oil significantly improved symptoms in patients with severe dry eyes after three months.

Retinal Protection: The antioxidants in bilberries may strengthen retinal capillaries and reduce vascular permeability. This may slow the progression of disorders like diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma.

Glaucoma Support: Long-term use (up to two years) of bilberry anthocyanins has been linked to improvements in visual function and lowered intraocular pressure in some patients with normal-tension glaucoma.

Night Vision: While traditionally famous for improving night vision (based on WWII pilot legends), modern scientific evidence is inconsistent. While it may aid dark adaptation in people with certain impairments, most studies show no significant benefit for healthy eyes.

Usage and Safety

To prepare bilberry tea, steep 1–2 teaspoons of dried leaves or berries in 8 oz of boiling water for 5–10 minutes, then strain. It can be sweetened with honey or served with key lime juice, offering a tangy, earthy flavor. The leaves are commonly used for a clean, tea-like brew, while berries create a fruity infusion.

Dosage: Standardized extracts are typically used at doses ranging from 160 to 480 mg daily, often standardized to contain 25% to 36% anthocyanins.

Precautions: Bilberry is generally safe, but it may have anti-platelet effects. Consult a doctor if you are taking blood thinners like warfarin or aspirin, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
